Cannabis is the name of the flowering plant commonly called marijuana. Cannabis wasn’t called marijuana until the beginning of the 20th century when Mexican immigrants were migrating to the US, and American officials wanted to make the cannabis plant seem foreign and sound Mexican. Today, the cannabis plant has many common names, including marijuana, pot, weed and hemp. Hemp refers to the cannabis plant stem (stalk) and is used for industrial purposes.
